🕰️ Between Assessment & Services

Once your assessment is complete, you are one big step closer to getting support. This page explains what usually happens next.

🧾 1. After your assessment

You will receive:

  • A letter or email confirming the outcome
  • Details of approved services (e.g., home support, respite)
  • A priority level showing how urgent your needs are

📅 2. Waiting for services

Approved support does not start immediately. Each person is placed in a national queue for funding or service availability.

The wait time depends on:

  • Your assessed priority level
  • Your location and provider availability
  • Government funding allocation

You can:

  • Keep in touch with My Aged Care for updates
  • Ask about short-term or interim help (e.g. CHSP or respite) while waiting
  • Keep your GP informed of any health or safety changes

🧍 3. While you wait – practical steps

Waiting can be stressful, but there are useful things you can do:

  • Stay connected with your GP – new medical information can support a review if needs change
  • Review home safety – remove tripping hazards, check lighting
  • Organise paperwork – Power of Attorney, Medicare card, pension details
  • Look after yourself as a carer – free support is at Carer Gateway or Helplines.com.au

💬 4. If your situation changes

If your needs or circumstances change — for example, more falls, hospital admission, or carer illness — contact My Aged Care (1800 200 422) as soon as possible.

They may arrange a re-assessment or update your priority level.

💡 5. Once funding becomes available

When your place in the queue is reached, you will receive an assignment letter or call from My Aged Care. Then you can:

  1. Choose a provider using the official Find a Provider tool
  2. Discuss your care plan and costs with them
  3. Start your services

✅ 6. Reliable official sources
